Visual Editor Now Usable

For me, the biggest improvement is the ability of the Visual (tinyMCE) editor to process DIV tags without screwing them up!

I read several comments on the WordPress about this - and some geeks responded that if you knew HTML, who would want to use the visual editor.

Well the reason is quite simple - time!

It is so much faster to able to type text - expecially when you like bulleted lists (as I do) - using the Visual editor, than it is adding all the tags by hand.

So - if nothing else had changed, this improvement would make the upgrade worthwhile.

Improvements

In this section I will highlight what I think are the improvements in this release of WordPress.

Kimili Flash Embed

I don’t often use this plugin - Kimili Flash Embed - Version 1.4.2 - but needed it for this site, and also for my customer support site.

It seems to work as expected :

Now I tried using the Add Video media button. This doesn’t appear to be an equivalent to the Kimili plugin, as it uploaded the flash file, and inserted a link in the post content. Clicking on the link did result in the flash being displayed - but not as an embedded flash object inside the post. Something to investigate further once the upgrade has been completed and issued.

Enlarger Plugin

This plugin failed in the Visual editor - as the aggressive filters strip out any invalid tags - and Andy was using a dummy tag which his plugin intercepted, and then inserted the javascript to manage the thumbnail / enlarge function.

I rewrote the plugin code, and emailed Andy with the updated code - so this is in effect fixed.

Andy has responded to my email with a big thanks, and wrote that he would update his site this weekend.

One of the features of RapidFormatter is the ability to change a sites colors by selecting one of a number of color options. By selecting a color option, you can have up to 40 CSS settings set automatically. But choosing how all these color shades tie together can be a pain.

Till recently I wrestled with Color Schemer Studio. It is a workable product, but its downfall is the preview window - a small window that gives you a crude idea of the color scheme :

Now contrast this to Color Wheel Pro - a new product I came across last week. In fact I came across it by Googling for an alternative to Color Schemer Studio (a product I bought about a year ago).

What I like about Color Wheel Pro is the sample Flash images that change color based on your color scheme. They provide multiple previews :

What I also like is that the window is scaleable - so you can resize your window to a decent size , and get a good idea of how the color scheme will look on a representative image.

Now the good news for us is that this is a new product. To help promote this product, you can get this for free you are willing to put a link on your site. You don’t have to publish an article like this. I just like the product, and thought I would share a neat web development tool with my readers.

Dagon Design Sitemap

No activation problem. Seems OK - output looks fine - but need to confirm that this is still working properly after implementing the full set of plugins I use for most sites. There were comments about conflicts with other plugins …

I’ve checked the output after the XML Sitempap was activated, and it still looked OK.

One thing that I have noticed, and it has been reported by others in comments on the plugin’s site - namely that the Page 2, 3, 5 etc fails - it keeps showing Page 1. In the short term, the way around it is to set the option to show all links on one page.

RNW PageManager

A pretty significant upgrade / fix was required for this plugin.

The new Manage Pages and Manage Categories lists do no have any category IDs displyaed, making it difficul to set up footer menus, and some of the sub-header me nu options.

Required changing quite a lot of code to get PageManager compliant with WP2.5.

Remove Max Width

This is a simple plugin I added simply to get rid of the new and irratating Max Width - which has been set to a default value of 980px.

Advanced Admin Menus

This plugin was also affected with the changes to the Admin section.

Fortunately an updated is available from the developer - so it was a quick fix.

RNW Widgets

The first plugin tested was RNW Widgets.

This activated, but failed to save any widgets added to the sidebars - due to the different widget admin code.

Had to rewrite 12 Widgets.

Test Theme

I quickly created a fun theme in RapidFormatter, and uploaded to this site.

Everything seems OK - so I think the themes shipped with RNW are ’safe’ with regards to the upgrade.
